The Evolution of Creativity!
Focusing on fine motor, letter recognition and presenting ideas in art formation

I first noticed Matilda attempting to hold a marker in the art area when she started the program in the toddler room. She was exploring how to properly hold a writing utensil and It took a lot of focus and determination. Matilda wrapped her hand around the marker while her other hand was holding the paper and she began to scribble (Physical 5.2 Making a Mark). Matilda smiled so big that lit up her face and she giggled to herself and that is when I knew she was proud of herself at that moment.

Matilda moved swiftly from scribbling to tracing objects that she found throughout the classroom. She used the marker lid and began to trace circles on the paper, afterwards she used her hand and began to trace that as well. Matilda looked around the classroom and raced towards the lower shelving where the play dough is. There she found a cookie cutter, she asked if she could use it even though she was not going to use the play dough. Before I knew it she was using multiple colours started tracing out the shape of a heart until it covered the whole page. I love the manners and creative mind that Matilda displays, it brings me happiness and joy throughout the day. She went from tracing objects to trying to draw free handed (Physical 5.3 Drawing). Working towards freehand writing our initials or full name. It is astonishing to see how far Matilda has come since she started her journey of life at the child care centre.

During my observations, I noticed that Matilda used different hands depending on the craft that she was doing. While doing crafts that involved using a marker, she would use her left hand. In comparison, while doing crafts that involved using a paint brush on an easel, she would use her right hand. I found her ambidexterity, the ability to use both your right hand and left hand very well, to be very interesting and makes me question which hand she will grow up to use. Those who are left handed are associated with having artistic talent so it doesn’t surprise me that she possesses such artistic qualities of enjoying painting and drawing.

I wonder if either of you are left handed? Handedness is often genetic! Are you noticing her using one hand more than the other at home?
